What is Altitude Sickness?
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) occurs when your body doesn't acclimatize fast enough to reduced oxygen levels at altitude. It can affect anyone regardless of age or fitness level.
Symptoms to Watch For
- Headache (primary symptom)
- Nausea and loss of appetite
- Fatigue and weakness
- Dizziness
- Difficulty sleeping
Serious Warning Signs (Descend Immediately)
- Ataxia (loss of coordination)
- Confusion or altered mental state
- Persistent vomiting
- Shortness of breath at rest (HAPE)
Golden Rules for Prevention
- Ascend slowly β never gain more than 300-500m per day above 3,000m
- Acclimatization days β rest days every 3-4 days at altitude
- Hydrate well β drink 3-4 liters of water daily
- No alcohol at altitude
- Listen to your body β never push through symptoms
Medications
Acetazolamide (Diamox) is commonly used for prevention. Consult your doctor before your trip.
