A Guide to Nepali Cuisine: What to Eat on Your Trek

Dipesh Mahato July 24, 2026 5 min read

Dal Bhat β€” The Trekker's Fuel

Steamed rice, lentil soup, vegetable curry and pickle β€” refillable, and eaten by porters and guides for good reason. It's the most reliable, high-energy meal on any trekking route.

Momos

Nepal's beloved dumplings, steamed or fried, filled with buffalo, chicken, or vegetables and served with a spicy tomato-sesame dipping sauce (achar). Found in nearly every tea house.

Thukpa and Sherpa Stew

In the higher Khumbu and Solu regions, hearty Tibetan-influenced noodle soups (thukpa) and Sherpa stew provide warmth and calories after a long day's climb.

Tea House Staples

  • Garlic soup β€” a trail favorite, believed to help with acclimatization
  • Tsampa porridge β€” roasted barley flour, common at higher altitudes
  • Ginger-lemon-honey tea β€” soothing after a cold night

Well written! I'd add that hiring a local guide makes a huge difference too.
