Why Island Peak?
At 6,189m, Island Peak is Nepal's most popular "trekking peak" β technical enough to feel like real mountaineering, achievable enough for fit trekkers with no prior climbing experience, given proper training and a qualified guide.
The Route
Most itineraries combine the classic Everest Base Camp trek with a side trip to Island Peak Base Camp, followed by a summit push starting well before dawn to reach the top and descend before the afternoon sun softens the ice.
Technical Sections
- A steep headwall near the summit, fixed with ropes
- Crevasse crossings on the glacier approach
- Use of crampons, harness, and jumar for the fixed-line sections
A day of pre-climb training at Base Camp covers all the skills needed β no prior experience is assumed.
Is It Right For You?
If you're comfortable at altitude, reasonably fit, and excited by exposure rather than intimidated by it, Island Peak is an achievable β and unforgettable β first summit.
